Product Review – Kai Kids organics

Anybody else having a tough time hunting down green gear for your tiny people?

The eco factor when shopping for kids clothes and gear in the Valley is something that parents searching for those organic-cotton t-shirts, toxin-free feeding options and chemical-free toiletries must almost solely rely upon the Internet for access to.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing – especially since the number of online eco-friendly kid-focused businesses selling not only the useful, but the super stylish are growing fast all across Canada giving parents even in the most remote locations ways to green their families.

Seeing the demand and being a part of the growing desire to make environmentally conscious choices for those of us North of 49, entrepreneurs such as B.C.-native turned Toronto mama Nancy DeHart and her husband Peter Chin are bringing a whole new wave of organic products to parents and kids across Canada through the magic of online shopping.

DeHart and Chin launched Kai Kids in November 2007 and I have to tell you, their site offers some really great gear that you will drop on your head for.

Here are just a few of the great finds you’ll discover over at Kai Kids.

The FANTASTIC Born Free line of Bisphenol-A-Free baby bottles.

Check out the Bamboosa Hooded Baby Towels

Super funky organic shirts, eco-slogan Ts, and oh-so-sweet kimono onesees.

And, the mother of all necessities around this neck of the woods, super sassy organic MATERNITY and NURSING WEAR (Yeah, more options!)

Nancy, I have to say, is one of those moms that you instantly love.

She’s energetic and passionate about giving families healthy options and I instantly connect with her because our stories are a lot alike – former journalists turned small business owners because having children changed EVERYTHING for us.

And, since it’s good to know who you’re buying from, I thought I’d let her jump in with a bit about her and Peter:

I’ve always been an outdoorsy, tree-hugger type, into recycling, working out and eating healthy etc. (must be my BC roots!) But when we had Kai in 2005 it all seemed even more important – protecting the environment for his future, and making sure he got the healthiest start possible by being careful about what he ate, wore, had on his skin, played with and more. Plus, babies bring so much stuff into your life and also create so much waste! So we started to make even more changes to our lifestyle.

By the time Garrett was born last January, we had made more changes. Ten days after Garrett was born (oh the timing!) Peter got downsized at work. He did a lot of reflecting on his future and what he wanted out of his working life, and for our family life, so we figured we might as well seize the day.

The more we talked about it, the more certain we became that organic was the right way to go. We figured, if in Toronto we can’t always find the organic, non-toxic, earth-friendly products we want for our own family, what about people in Naramata, BC, or Belledune, NB? Our life is about kids right now, it’s where our hearts are and interests lie at the moment and if we are researching for ourselves (toxic plastics, better laundry detergent, healthy mattresses etc.), we might as well use that info to help other families too.

In November we launched Kai Kids! Along the way I decided to do the business with him and so both of us work at home and share childcare of our two sons. Peter does the admin, inventory and tech side of things, and I write and edit, do PR, and do our buying.

Speaking of buying, Comox Valley Kids and Kai Kids have partnered up to offer CVK readers 15% off any non-sale merchandise over at Kai Kids throughout the month of February.

Here is the discount code: 00287010f6

Make sure you enter it at check-out time to get this exclusive deal.

So, get on over to Kai Kids and check it out. I think you’ll really dig what you discover.
