Spring NeighbourWood Walks – Seal Bay

Posted by Robin Rivers on June 5th, 2008 9 Comments Printer-Friendly

It’s official.

Mother Nature loves us.

Once again, the skies parted momentarily yesterday – long enough for the fifth in our Spring community walk series to be all sunshine and good times at Seal Bay Nature Park’s Swamp Loop.

This is a longish trail, made double long by the fact that there were creatures EVERYWHERE requiring a stop every 30 seconds or so to examine the latest series of slugs, caterpillars and other assorted forest finds.

Then, we stopped at the pond for a little pond dipping, checking out the tadpoles, trout smolts and other swamp-like creatures until an unfortunate net-related mishap that left us without said net.

But, all in all, the small group that made it out to the swamp yesterday had a super fun afternoon of discovery.

The last of our Spring walks is next Wednesday at the Filberg. We’ll walk a bit. But, more importantly, we’ll potluck picnic and hand out some goodies. So, if you are registered, think up a yummy dish to share and bust out the picnic blanket. Hopefully, Mother Nature will gift us with perfect weather one last time this season.

Otherwise, I’ll start suspecting she’s on vacation somewhere sunny and warm.

On another note, I get a handful of e-mails each week lately asking for tips and details on the ins and outs of family living in the Valley. It’s so great to hear that LOTS of young families are considering relocating to this region of the country.

I always pass along tips about daycare, schools and hooking up with medical professionals. But, I’m sure there are some great tips and points to note that I miss when people drop me a line.

So, if someone asked you what they should consider when relocating to the Valley or Campbell River, what would you tell them? What are the best things about living here as a family? Insider tips?

I know a fair whack of readers would love to hear what locals think of their community.

    Hi Aline. Hi Bevin.

We’ll announce the Summer NeighbourWood Walk schedule the third week of June and you can register via e-mail after that.

Drop me an e-mail and I’ll make sure you know about them as soon as they are out.

    Thanks for the comments!

The best thing about living here? – quite simply – it is a kind and warm community!

Thanks again for the great walk Robin – we were so happy to be able to make it this week! Looking forward to the picnic.

There are so many great things about living here, but I agree with Karen, it’s the wonderful, caring people and strong sense of community that makes everything else seem better here.

I’m so glad you asked your readers for their comments on life in the Comox Valley! We are considering relocating from St. Albert, Alberta to the Comox area and are actually going to be in Comox in a couple of weeks to take a good look around. My husband works from home (so we can pretty much move anywhere that has high speed internet – which I guess is almost anywhere these days) and we have two young kids. I’m looking forward to reading the replies. I’d really love to hear from people who have relocated to the Comox Valley. If they could share the good (and bad), I would be most grateful!

Hi Robin. Sorry we missed yet another walk but I was glad to see the weather was perfect while you were out. Life has just exploded since you started up- ain’t it always the way?

I lived in Black Creek for a short time a little over 20 years ago. For a combination of reasons I left and lived here, there and everywhere over the next 20 years but came back to the Valley to visit and drink it in many times. When I brought my husband here for a visit he fell in love with it and I knew we’d found our home. Days after bringing my 3 boys from Toronto my oldest said “This is the best place in the world! Thanks for bringing us here, mum.” He was 5 then and if Seal Bay, Goose Spit, countless deer in the fields and walking through town under the watchful eye of Queneesh was that powerful for him I can’t imagine who couldn’t be completely taken by the magic here. Of course the people are pretty special, too. The biggest problem I can see is the shortage of doctors but, sadly, that’s not special to the Valley. I would love to travel as my kids grow but I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Hi Robin, I must have missed the sign up for the spring walks to :( but would love to join in for the summer walks. I can’t seem to find a link to your email like you had mentioned in an above comment. Maybe you could email me from this comment and let me know? I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the upcoming sign up. Love stopping by and reading!

    Hi Robin!

I am looking forward to the next walk. The kids and I loved the tidal pools at Point Holmes. We are sorry that we missed the Macdonald park walk but had a prior commitment to do a hike on Mount Washington. It was great the boardwalk is super fun for the kids. Looking forward to this week – I hope the sun will continue to shine for us ;)

    Cheers Leanne
