Final Spring NeighbourWood Walk - The Filberg

I am shocked at how little time six weeks actually is.

Blink.

From our first meeting out at MacDonald Wood Nature Park to the last moments of exploration and hanging out yesterday at The Filberg, CVK’s Spring NeighbourWood Walk series seemed to just fly by.

I suspect that’s because we were so busy having fun, making friends and checking out the coolness that is this part of Vancouver Island.

With a food-filled wrap party, we said goodbye to Spring and are now looking forward to an even more fun Summer series.

There were some really amazing moments for me, like:

- Connecting with Jonah, who showed me a bit about framing the scene.
- Watching the girls like Charlotte, Ava, Mhari and Maddy become the bug lovers while the boys lived for sticks and rocks.
- Discovering the friendships that blossomed between them.
- Splashing in Morrison Creek
- Hill climbing at Miracle Beach (Matthias and Emmit proved amazing)
- Mhari and Ivan connecting through plants and creatures.
- Charlotte’s stories
- Maddy and Marin skipping in unison
- Kaden’s hammed up sense of adventure
- Mace teaching tiny Sarah a bit about the forest
- The remarkable connection that Mhari, Matthias, Abbie and Morgan discovered as the result of slugs
- How much our weekly I Spy challenges inspired kiddos to learn and see the forest/beach from a different perspective.

All in all, it was a remarkable six weeks. I am a big sap, crying right now just thinking about those kids out on the trail. It was so much fun!

There are several folks and organizations that get some extra love for all that they gave to make these walks happen.

Robyn Butler over at Active Comox Valley was instrumental, both with planning and treats for the kiddos (they got some awesome beach frisbees yesterday). ACV will continue to be a major partner for the NeighbourWood Walk series and we at CVK are so very grateful for her wisdom, insight and helping hand.

Normand and the crew over at St. Johns Ambulance get a big hug and major thanks for taking such excellent care of everyone while we were out on the trail. These folks are amazing.

Behind the scenes, Diane over at Scrapbook Central played a pivotal roll in helping us create both the Nature Passports and our NeighbourWoodie souvenirs. Scrapbook Central has agreed to join CVK as a major partner for the Summer series. Thanks Diane!

Finally, I’d like to send out a big thank you to everyone who jumped in for the Spring series. As CVK’s informal focus group, this crew happily took the twists and turns of a new program with ease, helping us discover what works, what’s too complicated and what needs to be available the next time around. Hopefully your guinea pig status for the last six weeks has meant lots of fun and adventure. We happily had only one rain delay and minor glitches.

Summer is coming up on us super fast.

So, if you are itching to get out on the trail, we will release the schedule for the Summer NeighbourWood Walks next Thursday (June 19). We have eight walks planned in July and August, with two times to choose from. Registration will begin on June 19 as well and, while we’ll be able to take 60 kiddos (30 for each walk) for this series, I anticipate both walks filling up by the end of Friday.

Looking forward to hanging out on the trail with you this Summer!

I just wanted to say a big thank you for organizing such a fun series of walks! I have lived in the Valley for 20 years now and many of those trails were new to me. It was great to meet some new people too!

Big thanks to you Robin for organizing these fabulous walks. It was above and beyond my expectations! We had so much fun, it has definitely been the highlight of my girls’ week - they have been proudly showing off their nature passports and pictures. We’re looking forward to the summer series.

Thanks so much Robin, it was so nice to be a part of these walks and meet so many nice families! We were about half-way home yesterday and I said something about it being our last nature walk and Charlotte burst into tears. Her comment was “But I’m just knowing my nature walk friends!!” Pretty much guaranteed that we will be a part of the summer group. Thanks again. :)
