Robin is Our Big Earth’s Executive Editor. A journalist with nearly 20 years under her belt, she’s worked for newspapers and magazines across North America. The Comox Valley became her home in 2006 when she and her husband ditched big-city life to be close to family while raising their daughter.

Motherhood, it changes you.

While there’s a whole list that involves sagging and wrinkled, exhausted and emotional that can be wrapped in there, for many women becoming a Mom takes life to a whole other level.

It brings out our genuine loves, forces them into places creatively and personally that reveal talents and ingenuity unrealized until that point.

It inspires.

Moms see a need and create the solution.

So, with this now occasional series we celebrate the genius of Comox Valley women who turn the lessons of parenthood into a resource for the community.

We celebrate local mom entrepreneurs.

Names: Sherry Turnbull & Kristina Jespersen
Ages: 29 & 32
Businesse: Little Me Children’s Clothing 105-2270 Cliffe Ave.
Town: Courtenay

Tell us a bit about your work: Sherry and Kristina, long-time friends and Valley residents, bought Little Me this Spring from the lovely Dana Watson, who traded in her brief case for some well-deserved family time. They opened the newly retooled store, featuring local, hand-made and organic baby gear as well as consignment, at the beginning of June.

Our inspiration comes from the combination of needing to stay with our children as well as wanting “something more.” Since we were both born and raised in the Comox Valley we feel that we understand the expectations of locals. Together with the recent scare of unsafe baby products and the rise in environmental awareness, our idea was born.

We haven’t really crossed this bridge yet. But, we will work this as a partnership and a big family.

We are too excited about this business. So even though sleep and silence would be bliss, I bet we would be having tea with our noses in paperwork and discussing great ideas.

Word of mouth!

We have a huge advantage of being a part of our community for so long that we just hope our fellow residents feel our excitement too.

As we are now, I think just taking deep breaths and taking it one step at a time has been our biggest challenge. We have received so much positive feedback - that’s success so far.

We are fortunate to have great support, friends and family play a huge roll. Karen McKinnon and Robin Rivers have been a great self-esteem boost since they are looked highly upon in the Valley.

We are hoping to make this business a true family affair. The kids will help us at work and we are still convincing our better halves to learn the retail tricks.

We are planning to give lots back to our community in the way of events, charity and friendships. That’s world domination to us.

Stay inspired and look to your community for support.

We have so many already!

Mom Stops, Diaper Pin, diaper swappers, CVK, Freecycle, Etsy, The Opinionated Parent, Mothering.com and the McKinnon Photography Blog.
