This Week - Reading, Day Camps and Nature

Beach Crew

Ah, two weeks of rest and relaxation (sort of) and I am back in the saddle (in a way) and full speed ahead into Summer (whoa).

Staycation is over for me, and I have to say that - while we literally never made it farther than up the mountain and down to Fanny Bay, the “time off” sure made a dent in the napping quotient and may have even been mildly productive. While I got way less done than hoped, the time focused on life around the house mostly made for some great perspective-gaining.

I highly recommend packing it up and heading for the…couch or backyard.:)

There is a TON of goodness going on around the region this week and beyond.

Here’s what’s happening:

- There are a handful of spots left in the 1 p.m. time slot for CVK’s Summer NeighbourWood Walk Series. Get all of the details on walks and registration HERE. We have changed a location for one walk. Glover Community Nature Park in Union Bay was originally scheduled for July 30. We won’t be heading there after all, instead trading it in for the Ship’s Point Loop in Fanny Bay - a spectacular walk with some side-trip bonuses that make the longish drive well worth it.

- Registration is now on for the Summer Art Education series through the Comox Valley Art Gallery. Classes for kiddos ages 7 to 18 are a great way to plug your young people into the arts and get their creative juices flowing. Check the website above or call 338-6211 to register or for more information.

- Soapbox derby kits for the annual Nautical Days race are now available through the Comox Kiwanis Club. The kits are $65 and you must build your own in order to participate. You can get a kit and register for the derby by calling Ron at 334-2257 or 897-8408.

- The Comox Valley Aquatic Centre reopens Wednesday after its month-long maintenance closure. Indoor pool schedules will be posted on the CVRD website.

- The Courtenay & District Memorial outdoor Pool at Lewis Park is open every day through the end of August. Open swims are Every Day from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and weekend family swim is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. every Sunday. Call 338-5371 for more information.

- The Miracle Beach Farmers Market is now open Thursday evenings through the Summer. This fun market packed full of homemade and homegrown goodness is from 4 to 7 p.m. at Miracle Beach Landing (at mini golf on the Old Island Highway). Check it out!

- Comox Recreation has huge whack of Summer Camps available for kiddos ages 6 to 11 including Under The Sea, Harry Potter, Space Camp and more. The camps are from 10:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and are $28 a day or $140 a week. Call 339-2255 for more information and check the website for details on all sorts of Summer programs for all ages.

- The new Comox Library is now officially open. When you drop in to check it out or hit your local branch, make sure to jump in to the VIRL Kids Summer Reading Program. Get a reading log and get involved with this FREE program that has lots of prizes and fun in store for excellent Summer readers.

- The Summer season at Miracle Beach Nature House is now in full gear. Check out nightly amphitheater programming at 7:30 p.m. that includes an exploration of the forest at night, learning about the food chain and more. If you are looking for something earlier in the day, check out the interpretive nature walks at 8:30 a.m. every Saturday morning. So Fun!
