Preschool Craft – Marble Painting

Posted by Robin Rivers on March 3rd, 2009 6 Comments Printer-Friendly

Editor’s Note: While we usually run our homeschooling column this first Tuesday of the month, we are trading Tuesdays in order to welcome our newest OBE partner - Let ‘Em Loose Play Land.

This fun family-friendly, energy releasing indoor play land in Campbell River has re-opened to the public full time and we are excited to have them as a part of the Our Big Earth community.

So, when the weather is grim or you just need a break, head up to Campbell River and enjoy!

As the tiny person and I keep going down the road of fun painting adventures that have no fussy mommy factor and a huge preschool messy factor, we have discovered the art of painting with marbles.

We got this idea from one of our recent trips to Becky Wortman’s Creative Exploration art classes and had a ton of fun with it at home.

It’s super basic, but amazingly creative and great for kids of all ages as you can make prints for older kids or keep it to the rolling of marbles in paint for the wee ones.

Here’s what you need:

- A plastic shallow container or cardboard box that fits an 8X11 piece of paper (we found the plastic container at the dollar store)

- Paper

- Tempera paint

- Marbles

Directions:

1. Place the paper in the container and squirt different colours of tempera onto the paper.

2. Place the marbles in the paint.

3. Shake the marbles around to make some great designs.

4. To make a print, place a clean piece of paper on top of the painting and then pull it off.

That’s it.

We made a whole whack of these with lots of different designs and made a huge mess (which was seriously fun).

I totally recommend this combination for a chilly, damp afternoon.

Cool. Reusing pizza or large cereal boxes (after a bit of trimming & cleaning) would be a great way to add some eco-ness to the craft.

A thrifted 9X13 baking pan should work (maybe contain a bit more of the paint than the basket there too!).

Fun! Definitely have to be prepared for the messy factor *grin*. We’ve done a similar thing with a salad spinner and put a piece of construction paper inside the basket with a few squirts of paint and then give it a good whirl around for wet and wild masterpieces :) I think I may wait for a nice outside day to attempt this one. LOL

We do this in old cake pans and it is a huge hit with all ages. I cut some of the larger sheets into squares once it dries and use it for thank you cards and gift tags.
