Robin is Our Big Earth’s Executive Editor. A journalist with nearly 20 years under her belt, she’s worked for newspapers and magazines across North America. The Comox Valley became her home in 2006 when she and her husband ditched big-city life to be close to family while raising their daughter.

Local Youth, Helen Austin Create “Island Home”

So, a while back the Shape The Future Comox Valley folks invited me to give a quick talk to the crew at their meeting of local residents focused on developing a sustainability plan for the Valley.

While I was there to talk to the adults, I was totally wowed by a crew of Huband Park Elementary 6th graders who gave an awesome presentation on what’s important to them in terms of Valley goodness and preserving it for the future.

Then, to top it off, they tapped into the talent of local songstress Helen Austin, who put their ideas to song.

The result was incredible!

I couldn’t help but be extra stoked that the kids took so much initiative and we all quickly got together to pull together a video featuring their genius work.

What came out of it was something that is sure to become a Comox Valley anthem in the days and years to come. I bet you’ll catch yourself singing this toe-tapping tune in the shower and coming back to listen to it over and over again. Not to mention that photos of the awesome kids who have taken part in the OBE NeighbourWood Walks program are featured as part of it all too.

I can’t say enough good things about these kids.

That’s why we love the Comox Valley, our island home.

Here’s their presentation too! Enjoy!

That’s unbelievable! Between the obvious hard work of those grade sixes and Helen Austin’s amazing talent, that is one very special piece of work. I’m flabbergasted. Love it, love it, love it. Thanks for sharing :)
