Editor’s Note: Good morning. We’ve got a fun craft for you this morning. But, it’s this afternoon that brings big news here at Our Big Earth.
It’s a deliciously detailed dish comes with a month’s worth of community goodness, family fun of the foodie kind and the chance to win nearly $3,000 in tasty treats.
So check back later today for the hot news on Our Big Earth’s Summer spectacular that is sure to make your mouth water.

We are bug and creature crazy at our house these days – spending our afternoons with the newly acquired (and newly broken, grrr) bug catcher collecting spiders and millipedes, laying in the grass watching the swallowtails swoop and the dragonflies drag race.
So, when we headed over to our friend Sarah’s place on Sunday for an afternoon of planning (the adults) and exploring (the kids), I was totally excited when she hooked us up with an easy, fun craft project that is golden in drawing the winged creatures in for a sip – the sugar water butterfly feeder.
Here’s what you need:
- Paper Cups (great way to reuse)
- Pink, red, yellow or orange tissue paper cut into the shape of petals
- Cotton Balls
- String or ribbon
- Glue sticks
- Scissors
- Water
- Sugar (1tsp)

Directions:
1. Take a cup and punch a hole through the bottom. Take the glue stick and rub it all over the bottom of the cup. Paste the petals on and stuff a cotton ball or two into the hole.

2. Punch a hole in either side of the top of the cup. Cut a piece of string 5 inches long and tie through the holes to make a hanger.

3. Take about half a small glass of water and mix it with the sugar. Fill the cup about 1/4 full and hang in your backyard.

4. The cotton ball with become damp and drip a bit. Wait and watch for the butterflies and dragonflies to come and have a drink.

I get that this is meant for a kiddie craft, but I think my adult boyfriend would just love it. Nothing makes him happier then our many bird feeders.
Thanks for this Robin,
I needed something bug/butterfly related to do with the kids today and this will be right up their alley
