Fast-Dry Towels for Active Families

Posted by Robin Rivers on August 17th, 2009 11 Comments Printer-Friendly

We are big on the outdoors thing. I know it’s not a shocking statement if you’ve been following us here at Our Big Earth for a while. But, whether it’s the middle of a glorious Summer or the dead of a gloomy Winter, you’ll more than likely find us in the forest or on the beach at least part of a given day.

That generally means that – one way or another – we end up wet, cold and in need of a towel or two to clean ourselves up, dry off and get moving on to the next adventure.

For ages, it meant just pulling a towel out of the linen cupboard and shoving it in a backpack. While that works fine, bathroom towels have their limitations and serious unpleasantness – bulky, slow to dry, quick to sour, a general pain to pack once wet.

I had no other real solution, until Leslie Hanes, the owner of Discovery Trekking Outfitters in Campbell River, dropped me an e-mail.

She introduced herself and gave me the rundown on all of the cool outdoor gear they manufacture – offering to send me one of their Wick-er Warm-Up Towels to try out.

It only took one day out on a rainy trail with this towel for me to decide it is so awesome.

This small-blanket sized towel is light, easy to pack and – best of all in my book – quick to dry. I’ve taken it to the beach, on rainy-outings and even used it for picnics and found it super easy to use and an addition to the perma-pack backpack that lives in the back of our truck. To understand what that means, nothing from the perma-pack ever really leaves the truck. So, it has to not mold, not smell and be uber-portable. This towel fits the bill.

I also love that it is understated at first glance. Really, just another towel, or so you think. But, this unassuming piece of fabric is a mom and dad’s very good buddy in the presence of puddle-loving kiddos.

So, if you are in the market for the ultimate wipe-up, warm-up, utilitarian towel, Discovery Trekking Outfitters has it.

We’re also giving away one of these gems.

So, the question of the day is what is your can’t-live-without gear that you always pack on a family outdoor adventure.

Here at Our Big Earth we have a strict policy about how we handle product reviews. We only review products we've enjoyed and, while businesses do occasionally send us products (we will always tell you when that is the case) we either pay for the product or use it as a giveaway. If a product is not reviewed, it is returned. If a product is reviewed, a business or advertiser has no editorial control over the review.

They see the review for the first time when you do. Advertisers and businesses cannot pay to have their products reviewed and you'll never see a link, product or business mention in a post that has been purchased by that business.

For our family I have to pack full changes of clothes. The kids will get wet, dirty and/or covered in sap at some point in the day. I have a bin the the van for extra clothing, snacks, towels (the stinky kind….) for the inevitable mess. That way I can let them explore without being uptight about what they get into.

I’ve been told they’re great for traveling too as they pack up so small and dry so fast

I’d have to say it’s the Outdoor Research hats that we bought for our girls. My sister was the first to purchase one for her daughter and I thought it was amazing. They’re really light with a HUGE brim; the sun really has to work hard to reach their chubby little cheeks. They float if they’re dropped in the water, they can be tossed in the washing machine, they’re adjustable to fit all sized heads, they have UPF 30+ protection, and for some reason the kids LOVE wearing them!!!

(The towel sounds great by the way.)

I love my mini LED photon light from MEC. I attach it to the zipper of my fleece pullover. At night its powerful beam will guide you into the tent without waking everyone up or stumbling over the kids. It’s also great for going to the loo in the dark as well.

my hubby’s favourite outdoor gear is a wee little stove that he takes with him into the alpine. he loves to sip tea up on the giant peaks :)

ruthie and i don’t need much… heck we’ve even swam in our clothes and driven home soaking wet several times this summer! ruthie would probably say that she loves having the camera with us when we head outdoors. this summer we’ve been making “music videos” together… singing while recording and then snuggling up on the beach to watch them.

we would love one of these towels to keep in the car for our spontaneous adventures.

Water and snacks are required. We also have the camera so we can share our day later with daddy.

Can’t trek without wellies, snacks or the camera. The wee dude can’t possibly explore without a car or truck, or both!

These look like a great addition to my essentials bin. Too bad I can’t win! ;-)

Having a boy with an “I’ll try anything!” outlook on life, our can’t-live-without is the Arnica (pills and cream!!).

Items that never leaves our daypack are seats my husband made by cutting up an old foam sleeping mat. They are light and just big enough to sit on. They are great for keeping our bottoms dry, warm and comfy wherever we might be taking a break be it the beach, a trail, or a damp picnic table. They are also great seats in the canoe and kayak. Best of all they were super cheap. We got 6 seats from one second-hand sleeping mat which cost of $4!

Hey, thanks for the towel OBE! As we were loading the kids in the car to go to the river, I saw a package peeking out of the mailbox and it was the towel! How’s that for timing? It was the perfect size to wrap a shivering, wet 3yr old after her swim. So far, so good!
    Thanks again.
