The Fit Family – Creaky Bones & The Death of Procrastination

Editor’s Note: Happy Monday. If you missed our early post, check out our review of Roylco’s fossil rubbing plates HERE. Meanwhile, we are slugging through finding our workout groove:

FitFam110209

Oh how uninspiring we find ourselves these days. Ken and I both agree that we have mental blocks when it comes to long term fitness. But, really, we have plenty of physical realities too…and those are the ones that stop us dead in our tracks. But, we are working through the toughest points, the ones that always seem to break us when we’re on our own, and getting there – slowly but surely.

Here’s the last two weeks from both of our perspectives:

Robin: Finally, I am seeing some serious progress in both my stamina and strength. The last two weeks have meant major strides in that I’ve been logging an average of 50 minutes on the treadmill 4 days a week at heavy incline – even when completely exhausted and wishing I was laying on the couch moaning.

I’ve even progressed to a new weight level in strength training, max reps and feeling some serious strength developing in my shoulders and legs again. One thing I’ve been dealing with since the beginning – basically since the tiny person arrived – is one seriously problematic lower back. Even that is improving steadily and the pain that seems rather regular actually found some relief WITH exercise instead of the oh-so-popular lay on the couch and moan method.

Progress!

Then, at our NeighbourWood Walk last Thursday, in the pouring rain, I picked the 50-pound child up and lost my footing a bit in the process. That creaky back bit the bullet – and I mean bit the bullet. The moaning couch thing, well…

I don’t sit down well, which may be my problem in general. So, I downed some Advil and made my way through a slamming busy couple of days after, grimacing all the way. Finally, I had to give in.

Damn my aching back…damn my silly penchant for picking the kid up…just damn.

Hopefully, we’ll see Rhonda tomorrow and I’ll ease back into things – regaining the necessary momentum.

The universe is conspiring to make me rest for a while:)

Ken: Sickness, now deadlines. Another incredibly productive few weeks of work that were equally as unproductive in terms of exercise. The good news is that I think I’ve come up with a name for my bi-weekly column. I think I’ll call it:

“The Slow, painful Death of ‘I’ll do it Tomorrow’”

I’d say I was procrastinating but is that possible when you’re averaging 4-5 hours of sleep a day? I don’t know… all I do know is that it’s difficult to exercise even 30 minutes a day when you can barely keep your eyes open. That being said, I think I may have actually experienced exercise euphoria during a workout this week. Of course it could have just been exhaustion, maybe a latent caffeine high? It’s hard to tell these days. But, at the end of the day all of these things are excuses and overcoming my penchant for them is what I have to do regardless of the circumstance. All of the excuses, the ‘valid’ reasons why… all of it equal what I am now and if it continues, well there’s only one place they’ll get me.

So, on this third update, the start of our 6th week I am, once again committed to a full 2 weeks worth of exercise and to, especially, excising the term procrastination from my vocabulary, lifestyle and fitness goals.

As Yoda says (hey, I worked for LucasFilm where one of the perks is liberal quoting of films and characters, in fact it was encouraged!)… “there is no try, only DO!”

Thank you oh diminutive green sage, those words will echo in my ears during each push-up, each stride on the treadmill and every sticker I ad to the calendar. I mean really, who better to inspire me than Yoda

Till next time…
