All of our Heritage good times out at The Filberg last Sunday made me get all nostalgic for projects that induce that cozy feeling, are not so frustrating and generally keep a kid’s attention for more than a milisecond. Two that we did over the weekend were super fun and easy – stained glass and our most beloved decoupage lanterns.
Here are the tutorials for both of these gems. We’re off for a mid-week snuggle.
Stained Glass

Here’s what you need:
- Wax paper,
- bits of paper to cut up into triangles, squares and rectangles,
- white glue,
- a paintbrush,
- scissors, and
- bits and baubles to decorate your quilt with (we chose beads, stickers and stamps).

Directions:
1. First, cut the paper into shapes and then rip off long sheets of wax paper to serve as the base. They can be any size you want.

2. Get your glue and paintbrush ready. Paint the glue onto the wax paper in a thin layer.

3. Start sticking the shapes onto the wax paper. We made one with tissue paper shapes and the other with foil, cardboard, craft paper and tissue paper shapes to see how different textures work together.

4. Take the bits and baubles and start decorating.

5. Hang them on the window and they are gorgeous for the sun to filter through or spread them out in a favourite spot to use for just about anything you can imagine!
Decoupage Lanterns

Here’s what you need:
1. Tissue paper cut up into small shapes,
2. White glue,
3. Paint brush (that can be gummed up a bit),
4. Glass pasta sauce or other types of jars, and
5. Votive candles.
Directions:
1. Clean and dry jars thoroughly.

2. Take your tissue paper and cut it up into small pieces. We set them out, sorted by colour, in tin pans for easy grabbing.
3. Put some glue in a bowl and water it down a bit do that it’s a thin paste. Take a jar and begin painting one side with glue.

3. Start sticking your tissue paper on. They can overlap. Then paint another light layer of glue over the top.

4. Let the jars dry thoroughly. Then, slip a votive in there, light the candle and watch your space twinkle and glow.

These look great and would be nice displayed around the house. We will have to get out our supplies this afternoon. Sometimes when we make crafts like the Stained Glass, I give my toddler a sheet of mactac to help her stick without as much frustration and she thinks she is doing the same thing as her older brother. Thanks for the wonderful ideas!
