Craft – Chinese New Year + Valentines = Felt Fortune Cookies

Posted by Robin Rivers on January 26th, 2010 8 Comments Printer-Friendly

I was completely stumped this year when we started going through the craft books and websites looking for Valentine’s Day crafts. The sense was that there are some cute ones out there, but neither of us really wanted a pile of paper hearts, or to spend the time peeling and grating crayons to make a fun waxed paper stained glass craft.

Then, when I started thinking about projects for Chinese New Year, I realized that both celebrations are February 14 this year. Now I was in double knots about what we’d end up whipping up on the craft table.

Thankfully, Martha Stewart came to the rescue with an absolutely adorable, super easy and really fun craft project that combined the two holidays with style and still honored each.

We made piles and piles of these Valentine’s Day Fortune Cookies in an hour or two and are planning a few special drop-offs to friends and family.

Here’s what you need:

- Red, pink and white sheets of felt,

- A 4-inch circle to use as a tracer,

- Floral wire,

- Ribbon to match the felt,

- A glue gun,

- Scissors,

- A marker, and

- Craft paper.

Directions:

1. Take the felt, the circle and the pen. Trace the circles onto the felt and then cut them out.

2. Cut the floral wire and ribbon into sections that are just a little bit shorter than the length of the middle of each circle.

3. Place a section of wire across the middle of a circle and use the glue gun (ADULTS ONLY, SO HOT) to glue the ribbon down over it. Marthastewart.com suggests using craft glue. But, I didn’t want to wait the 30 minutes for them to dry.

4. Fold the felt circle in half, using the wire as a guide, so ribbon is inside cookie. Next, angle the sides toward each other, bending the wire at its halfway point and forming a fortune-cookie shape.

5. Take your craft paper and cut it into thin strips. Write a simple saying on them and insert them in the fortune cookie.

There you have it - a fun, fantastic way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year with style.

Thanks Martha!

This is a fantastic craft! Something new to exchange at school instead of the traditional store bought valentines.

    Oh Robin,
We were planning on making these exact same things this year! Beats the Batman & Tweety-bird throw away ones that kids are usually stuck with. Thanks for reminding me that I really need to go buy felt! Love it!

Thanks you guys. They were so much fun to make.

Karen, you can get the floral wire at PJs Arts and Crafts on 14th and Cliffe.

Love it! Thank you! I’m still day dreaming about the words of wisdom that were inside my YANA xmas cracker, “Sometimes opportunity knocks very softly.” Now I’m excited to get my kiddos thinking of fortunes for others. Such a cool idea.
