Campout Food – Owl Smores

| July 27, 2011 | 0 Comments

If you couldn’t tell, I have camping on the brain. We may never get to the actual act of setting up a tent and sleeping in it overnight this year. But, wiener roasts, ghost stories and some night star gazing are going to happen – even if it’s just in the backyard or at the Goose Spit.

When I was a kid, at least part of my summer every year was spent at camp and one of the best parts of camp were the fantastically sweet and melty campfire foods wrapped in tin foil, steaming and making us drool.

We made everything from corn on the cob and baked potatoes to steaks that way. But, of course, my fave was dessert. This year on my hunt for all things owl I discovered a new dessert that is so very perfect for the campfire – owl smores.

So very cute and easy, you can even make these in the microwave at home with no campfire in site.

Here’s what you need:

- A bag of large marshmallows

- Chocolate chips

- Tiny colored licorice bits (I found some at Thrifties)

- Graham crackers

Directions:

1. Take the marshmallow and cut it in half.

2. Toast each half over the fire and then place them on a graham cracker to make the beginnings of eyes.

3. Stick a chocolate chip in each marshmallow.

4. Stick the licorice bit between the marshmallows.

You can make these at home by cutting the marshmallow in half, sticking it on a graham cracker and putting it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds or until the marshmallow just starts to puff up. Then add all of the other goodies.

There you have it – owl smores. Just a bit of hooty magic for those wilderness adventures.
