The Green Home – Winter Skin Care and Homemade Remedies

Canadian winters can be crazy on skin – especially the delicate skin of tiny people and the sensitive skin of busy moms. Here in Halifax, the freezing temperatures and icy winds of January have left their mark on our faces in the form of dry, dull skin as well as rough red patches and chapped hands too. Winter is prime time for pumping out the hand cream and the lotions. But, looking at the labels of many of those creams is a lesson in “what could that stuff possibly be.” Plus, they are remarkably expensive and none of us really want to trek out to the drug store in -30 degree weather for cream.

It’s way more fun to take a peek in your kitchen cabinet, especially on those days when the kids may be home from school and need a project. Surprisingly, most family pantries and refrigerators will have everything you need to whip up some wonderful homemade face and hand salves that will make the whole family’s skin glow, your pocket book smile and may even fight the winter blues a bit too.

Here are two sweet and simple recipes – the first is for homemade exfoliant to brighten and freshen your skin. The second is for an oatmeal scrub to sooth, moisturize and protect winter-worn skin.

Homemade Sugar & Lemon Exfoliating Scrub to make you glisten

This easy scrub is a staple spa-like treat for any beauty regime (and a fun way to kick off an afternoon at home with tea, cookies and the painting of toenails).

Here’s what you need for an individual amount of scrub. Just double or triple the recipe for a larger batch:

  • 1 TSP of granulated sugar
  • 1 TSP of honey
  • A splash of fresh lemon juice

Combine for a nourishing scrub that uplifts you with its bright scent, loves your skin and returns that fresh-faced glow.

Soothing Oatmeal Scrub to Nurture Sensitive Skin

This lovely, comforting scrub moisturizes and heals winter-worn skin, especially those red patches that come from playing hard in the cold, wet and blustery afternoons full of sledding, skating and skiing.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 TBSP of ground oatmeal
  • 1/4 TSP of salt
  • 1 TSP of olive oil or water (depending on how oily your skin is)

Mix together, spread over your face concentrating on dry patches and leave for about 10 minutes before rinsing. A lovely treat to say I Love You to your skin.
